· Sun Valley Tree Planting Ceremony
|
During his annual State of the City Address on July 12, 2006, Mayor John Hickenlooper announced his goal to triple the number of trees in the city of Denver. To accomplish this plan, one million trees will need to be planted over the next twenty years.

|
To initiate the campaign, the mayor looked to the Sun Valley neighborhood. It was decided that one-hundred trees would be planted in the community on Friday September 15, 2006. This tree planting was the beginning of a widespread effort throughout the city.

The work of digging holes, planting the trees and spreading mulch was done by high school students from around the world. As a service project, attendants of a Peace Jam conference held in Denver did the dirty work. |
Peace Jam is an international effort to connect Nobel Peace Laureates with youth in an attempt to encourage the next generation towards peace. The tenth anniversary brought youth and former Laureates, such as the Dalai Lama, to Denver as the largest gathering of former Peace Prize winners in the United States ever. The tree planting went very well as the students and volunteers from Denver University and The Park people oversaw the action. Hopefully the newly planted trees will grow for years to come and provide shade to those in Sun Valley.
