Public Housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Public housing comes in all sizes and types, from scattered single family houses to high-rise apartments for elderly families. The U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers Federal aid to local housing agencies (HAs) that manage the housing for low-income residents at rents they can afford. The DHA owns and manages over 3800 Conventional Low Rent Public Housing units located throughout the City and County of Denver. There are several types of housing available ranging from conventional row-type developments, dispersed housing (scattered single or cluster family houses), and high-rise buildings designated for elderly persons and persons with disabilities.
