The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (“HCV”) Program is a federal program that provides rental assistance to very low-income families (i.e. families with incomes below 50 percent of area median income).  The HCV Program is funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (“HUD”), and is administered by a public housing authority, such as the Denver Housing Authority.

Families who are interested in applying for the HCV Program must participate in the random choice lottery (“Lottery”).  The Lottery is opened annually for two days.  Families participating in the Lottery must abide by DHA policies and rules.  For more information on the Lottery and Application Process,

In order to qualify, the families must be income eligible, without any recent drug or violent criminal activity.  Eligible families are afforded to rent a safe, decent and sanitary housing in the private rental market.  The family pays 30 percent of their adjusted income towards rent; and HUD subsidizes the remaining portion directly to the landlord via DHA.
