Lottery Questions and Answers
1) What is the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program “HCVP”?
The Section 8 HCVP program was established to provide rental assistance to very low-income families to obtain safe, decent, affordable housing in the private rental market.
2) Who funds the Section 8 HCVP?
The Section 8 HCVP is funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (“HUD”) and is administered through a public housing agency, such as the Denver Housing Authority (“DHA”).
3) How does a person apply for the Section 8 HCVP?
DHA utilizes a lottery. The lottery is opened annually for two days per calendar year. The 2010 lottery will be held on February 11, 2010 (Thursday) beginning at 8:00 a.m. until February 12, 2010 (Friday), at 4:00 p.m. Interested individuals may submit a lottery entry on these days via the internet at DHA’s website: www.denverhousing.org.
4) Who can participate in the Section 8 HCVP Lottery?
You must be 18 years of age or older, and a U.S. citizen or eligible immigrant, and have legal capacity to enter into a lease under state and local law. You do not have to live in the City and County of Denver to participate in the lottery; however, if you are a non-resident, you will be required to lease a unit in Denver for the first 12 months after received your voucher.
5) Can I submit more than one lottery entry?
No, if you submit more than one lottery entry, you may be disqualified. Multiple entries will be voided.
6) If I participate in the lottery, will this guarantee me a Section 8 HCVP voucher?
No, DHA will hold a computer generated random drawing when vouchers are available throughout 2010. Notice of the drawings will be published in the Legal Notice Section of the Rocky Mountain News, Denver Post, and DHA’s website. If your lottery number is selected, DHA will notify you by mail with instructions to start the application process. Numbers drawn will be posted at DHA sites (the sites will be posted at the time of the drawing notice) and on DHA’s website. Numbers not drawn by the end of the year (December 31, 2010) will be discarded.
7) What are the 2009 income limits for the Section 8 HCVP?

8) If I have a change of address, do I need to notify DHA?
