Denver Housing Authority Volunteers Support Food Bank of the Rockies

DENVER – Friday, August 18, 2023 – More than two dozen Denver Housing Authority (DHA) employees volunteered at the Food Bank of the Rockies helping to prepare food donations for hundreds of Denver families experiencing hunger during a Day of Service on August 17, 2023. Together, they packaged 26,267 meals.

“Since the pandemic, there has been an increase in the need for food assistance across the Denver area and Denver Housing Authority is proud to partner with the Food Bank of the Rockies to help sort and prepare food donations for community members this year during our Day of Service,” said David Nisivoccia, Chief Executive Officer of DHA.

DHA’s mission is to not only serve the residents of Denver by developing, owning, and operating safe, decent, and affordable housing, but to also partner with organizations that help provide other important services including food stability for those who need it. Food Bank of the Rockies is the largest hunger-relief organization in the Rocky Mountain region. Since 1978, they have put the power of community to work for neighbors in need through partnerships, programs, and people. More than 180,000 meals are distributed daily through partnerships like this.

Last fiscal year (July 2022 – June 2023), Food Bank of the Rockies distributed more than 81 million pounds of food, equivalent to more than 66 million meals, to people in Colorado and Wyoming experiencing food insecurity. That’s an average of over 181,500 meals a day. Volunteers with Food Bank of the Rockies help sort and pack food in the distribution center, as well as help distribute food directly to people who need it at Mobile Pantries. Volunteers donated 112,800 hours in the past year, which is the equivalent of 4,700 days/nearly 13 years.
