Beware of scams
Tips from the Federal Trade Commission regarding how to avoid Housing Choice Voucher/Section 8 related scams:
- Housing authorities do not charge fees, and they will not reach out to you by phone or email to suggest that you join a waiting list (or lottery).
- A housing authority also will never ask you to wire money or pay with a prepaid card. Those are sure signs of a scam.
- Treat your Social Security number and other personal information (say, credit card numbers), like cash. Do not give them out on a website you find through a search.
Changes in household income or family composition: What to do
Report changes of income or household composition within 10 days of the change.
- Notify your housing provider of changes of income that may cause a delay/issue with paying your rent on time.
- Obtain permission/notify your landlord before adding a family member to the household.
- Change forms are can be found here.
Moving with continued assistance
Review your lease agreement, your lease should explain how to end the lease.
- Provide both the housing provider and the HCV office with copies of your notice to vacate.
- If you are relocating outside of the City and County of Denver, please contact the HCV Portability Department.
- Ensure your unit is in the same or similar condition as when you moved into the unit.
- Consider conducting a walk though inspection with your Housing Provider before moving (and take pictures/sign a move out inspection report).
